I worked as a kindergarten teacher at this establishment for 1 year, 2018-2019. I will talk about some pros to this job, some cons, and then simply list things that had happened here free of my input or opinions so you can objectively read and decide what you think.
+Salary is good, and is compet*t*ve with other kindergartens in the area.
+Foreign teachers get a 2 hour break during the children's nap-time.
+Work is extremely easy with little to no oversight, teachers can do whatever they want in their individual classrooms. Work is shared between two other Chinese teachers and an aiyi.
+There is a basic book curriculum provided for English learning, but all teachers must make their own lesson plans from said book, however this grants a lot of flexibility to individual teachers.
+Apartments provided (as long as it's the one they show you pictures of, see below) are clean and convenient.
+Lunch is provided everyday.
-Little to no support for foreign teachers, I personally had no help with basic things such as apartment problems, bank account, or internet. Most foreign teachers here are not new to China so this isn't a problem usually, but teachers new to China should take note.
-Little to no training, orientation, or mentorship for new teachers for English teaching or IB. Teachers just jump in and begin teaching.
-Extremely high turnover of both Chinese and Foreign teacher staff, resulting in situations where all teachers in a classroom are new to the school and sometimes new to teaching meaning a very high-stress environment.
-No rules or guidance on teacher/parent relationships, all communication you are expected to do via your own private WeChat account making you accountable at any hour of the day, teachers take full responsibility for problems in the classroom with no support or protections from the school. (see below)
And above all else:
-Extremely unprofessional management who resorts to name-calling, public humiliation, lying, and shame to try and control their teachers.
Some situations I personally witnessed or experienced while I was there. These are my personal experiences and it isn't the same for all teachers of course.
*I was arrested my first few days due to the school improperly processing my residence permit transfer. When I tried contacting the school no one answered, I got an apology 3 days later from the assistant not the main management.
*On two separate occasions I witnessed the school bait-and-switch scam new teachers, they sent photos of an apartment to new teachers and then once the teachers arrived put them in an older, dirtier apartment much further away from the school. Situations were rectified after much hassle and argument.
*On two separate occasions, teachers were asked to apologize and publicly humiliate themselves in-front of the entire school for personal problems or mistakes they made. When one refused and quit, the principal instead read their private messages and name-called them in front of the entire school.
*In one class a child was running and fell down accidentally, she chipped her tooth, the school made the teachers pay for the dental repairs from their own salaries and apologize.
*On one occasion, the management, while interviewing new teachers, name-called and trash-talked current employees to potential new-hires.
*On three separate occasions select teachers were treated to additional training, school visits, or even a vacation to Bali. These opportunities were never advertised but instead given to certain teachers. Other teachers who did not get them were left wondering why or what happened, since there was no communication.
*This establishment broke my personal contract 3 times with required additional overtime that was not paid. (I had already done the 6 times unpaid they put in the contract.)
*I witnessed the school require teachers to work an additional 12 hours (overnight) on top of a normal 8 hour day for no additional pay or compensation. When challenged, the management became defensive and aggressive.
*This school subjected their entire foreign staff to invasive medical exams under the guise of getting health insurance, but in the end we never got health insurance, there was no further communication about it from management, but there was a lot of speculation it was just a way to drug-test all the teachers to make sure we weren't doing drugs.
Take everything as you will. I hope this review helps someone make a better decision.
